Johnny is a native of Muskogee, Oklahoma and attended Muskogee Public Schools, joining the band music program as a student in 1972. Participating in the instrumental program available, Johnny was a member of the Whittier Elementary Band, Alice Robertson Junior High School C, B, A, and Stage Bands, and during his years at Muskogee High was a member of The Pride of Muskogee Marching Band, The Muskogee High School Symphonic Band, and the MHS Jazz Ensemble, as well as participating in the pit orchestra on the drums for the musical performances of My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and Guys and Dolls by the MHS Music Department and the All School Musicals. The pinnacle of this participation was being awarded "Most Outstanding Jazz Musician" for the class of 1979, a distinction almost exclusively given to horn players or guitarists in that era. Having completed all of his regular required curriculum by the state to earn a diploma, he also enrolled in and completed a two-semester college level music theory curriculum offered by Marjorie Malone, an NSU professor and then sponsor of the drill team flag corps.
After Graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Henry L. Stimson, SSBN 655 (Gold Crew) as a nuclear missile technician. Upon discharge from the navy, Johnny enrolled at Northeastern State University and participated in the Band and Jazz Band programs there under the direction of Robert Bailey and Joe Davis, respectively.
He operates Wild Card Entertainment, LLC as an accounting, management and booking entity for Muskogee's Wild Card Band. He is the drummer and co-lead singer for Muskogee's Wild Card Band (AKA Wild Card / The Wild Card Band) and serves as the drubber for Cowboy Jones, A.H. Pierce and The Arrows, and among other musical entities as an on-call drummer for The Shelby Minner Band, Bebo McDaniel ane the Evil Doers, and the Sun Dawgs.
He serves on board of directors for The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, and has been a long-time member of of the Muskogee Community Band and the Muskogee Alumni Band Association. He is a member of the American Legion James F. Smith Memorial Post #15 in Muskogee. He and his wife Lori live in Muskogee with their dog, Riley, and two cats, Dottie and Piper. His son Nicholas and wife Kelli live in Tulsa with their two children, Connor and Lydia. He enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, fishing, and playing all types of music.
